Citroen plans to be a major player in the SUV segment with their latest model. New suspension and plug-in hybrid to make debut
It’s hard to imagine something as attractive as this be associated with the word ‘offensive’, but as we reported just a few days ago, the C5 Aircross is exactly that. Citroen expects it to make an impression in the global trend of SUV popularity. It premieres at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show very soon but the company has released the vehicle’s first images together with details.
Clearly, the all-new C5 Aircross stylish with the typical Citroen take on aggressive styling. It’s 2.73 metre wheelbase makes it slightly longer than the (new) VW Tiguan’s, although slightly less than Merc’s GLC. Having said that, we’re not quite sure which way the Citroen wants to go up against. Going with past models, the VW, likely.
What makes it unlike other SUVs – ones we usually see, at least – the C5 Aircross’ chic exterior flows right into the cabin. There’s a tall centre console that houses a funky gear lever. The air-cond vents all seem oversized, two of which flank a large 8 inch touch screen. The digital meter cluster is even larger at 12.3 inch (TFT).
The company also tries to make a point of its ‘Progressive Hydraulic Cushions’ suspension system which first sees use in the C5 Aircross. Whereas a conventional suspension system is made up of dampers, springs and mechanical bump-stops, the new Citroën system adds two hydraulic stops to each suspension unit – one for rebound and one for compression. In this way the suspension functions in two steps, depending on input.
As part of the Citroen Advanced Comfort programme, passengers will get to enjoy, among others, a panoramic sunroof, heating and massage functions for the front seats and better air quality thanks to an air purifier.
Safety measures in the Citroen C5 Aircross include Active Safety Brake, Active Lane Departure Warning plus Adaptive Cruise Control with a Stop function. Additionally, there is Grip Control and Hill Descent Control.
Powered in China by the latest-generation petrol engines developing 165 and 200hp, along with the EAT6 e-shift automatic gearbox, New C5 Aircross provides driving comfort, driving pleasure and outstanding efficiency.
This will be the first Citroën vehicle to feature the Plug-In Hybrid PHEV e-AWD drivetrain, bringing amazing dynamic performances. This hybrid drivetrain will comprise a 200hp petrol engine and two electric motors, and will develop total output of 300hp. New C5 Aircross will then become the most powerful Citroën production car ever. Four modes of operation will be available: ‘All-electric’ (with a range of 60km), ‘Hybrid’ for long distances without charging, ‘Combined’ and ‘4X4’. This innovative technology will make it possible to charge the battery during deceleration or via the combustion engine while driving.
The all-new Citroen C5 Aircross will first be sold in China by October 2017, before it arrives in Europe at the end of 2018.
