The runaway train of new Mercedes-AMGs continues. Today it’s the turn of the GLC and GLC Coupe SUVs, which have spawned refreshed versions of the AMG 43. These are the sensible, quite-fast V6 ones, not the blood’n’thunder, cartoonishly fast V8 AMG 63 ones.
Got it? Good. So, here’s what’s new. Headlights and taillights have new LED shapes. Big whoop. Up front, the slatted AMG grille appears to give the GLC 43 some face-end attitude to scare away anyone who might dare ask ‘so you couldn’t afford the V8, then?’. At the back, there are four round tailpipes. At the side, a different style of alloy wheel.
Under the bonnet live more horses. Twenty-three more, in fact, lifting the twin-turbo V6’s muscle to 385bhp, thanks to bigger turbos and a software remap. Both versions of the GLC 43 get from 0-100kph in a brisk 4.9 seconds, and are limited to 250kph flat out. So, it’s pretty much exactly as fast as it was before, but it looks a bit more butch.
Being a facelifted GLC, the SUV and Coupe also get more screens inside. There’s a digital instrument display with many readouts and colours, and a touchscreen atop the dashboard with AMG apps on board to record our lap times and G-forces and other things probably not advisable in a 1,900kg 4x4. The 43s are also the final GLCs to get Mercedes’ latest steering wheel, complete with touchpad buttons for controlling – you guessed it – the fleet of screens.
Hopefully there’s still a setting to make the exhaust pop and bang like crazy too, because the GLC 43 has never been any stranger to some exhaust histrionics.
There are modes for just about everything else: suspension stiffness, engine, gearbox and steering assistance… but no Drift Mode. That’s reserved for the V8 GLCs. Still, this four-wheel drive system is set up to deliver 69 per cent of torque to the rear wheels, so it should still feel a tad lively in the wet. We’ll report back when we drive it, because that’s what we do.
