Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition

This deep cherry Porsche with a livery that screams retro is the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, the first in Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur's range of 'heritage design' models inspired by decades gone (think '50s to '80s). And it's now on sale in Malaysia by Sime Darby Auto Performance for the cool price of RM1,677,409 after SST exemption (still a lot cheaper than a Singer commission).

You can easily tell the 'Heritage' model from the standard Targa by the race number on the side that looks like a speed limit sign slapped on the door, and the white stripes which include the 'spears' running above the front wheel arches – a tip of the hat to Porsche's earliest days in motorsports, when white paint used to be applied in those areas to gloss over scuff marks. There are also a bunch of gold emblems around the car to amplify the vintage look.

In true 'heritage' fashion, the car you see here matches the burgundy-ness of the exterior with a fittingly red interior paired with a shade of 'Atacama' beige. And if you look closely past the panels wrapped in leather, you'll find that the centre panels of the seats and door panels are finished in good old corduroy – a ribbed fabric used in the Porsche 356 – to really turn back the clock.

Speaking of the clock, the one inside the Targa that comes as part of the standard Sport Chrono package features green digits in another tip of the hat to Porsches of the past – the hands and digits on the semi-digital instrument cluster go from white to green the moment the 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat six engine comes to life too.

As the name of the car suggests, the powertrain is as you would expect from a 911 4S, meaning you get 450PS, 530Nm of torque and all-wheel drive. Combined with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the engine will propel the car to 0-100kph in under 3.6 seconds with the help of Launch Control, all the way to a top speed of 304kph.

Despite its distinct packaging, buyers are still offered a degree of customisation for the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design. Not a fan of the Cherry Metallic exterior? Black, Guards Red, GT Silver Metallic and 'Crayon' are available options too. Similarly, those who aren't quite fond of the red-on-beige cabin can swap the Bordeaux Red panels out for black – the beige has the be preserved for obvious reasons. The wheels featuring Porsche's historic crest can also be repainted and upsized from 20 to 21 inches in diameter, though these tweaks will naturally add a few thousand Ringgit to the bill.

So, what do you think folks? Is this the retro 911 you've been waiting for?
