Nissan uses new tech to produce NISMO heritage parts

By sep, 22 March 2021

Last week, we posted about a very tasty Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R restored to its pristine condition thanks to the NISMO Restored Car initiative. Today, we’ve learned that the Japanese manufacturer has been utilising some new technologies to produce the parts under the NISMO Heritage Parts program, bringing their classics back to life.

The use of dual-sided dieless forming for body panels and 3-D printing for resin parts have been used since October 2019 to produce a number of panels for the Skyline GT-R line-up by pressing rod-shaped moulding tools from both sides of a steel sheet using robots. Quality is key here, which is why they’re producing the parts in low volumes (which also explains the high price tag, especially for the R32).

They’ve successfully recreated enhanced versions of the rear body panels by combining this new tech with Nissan’s skilled workers to produce some very high-quality stuff. Throughout the years, the NISMO Heritage Parts program has expanded its offerings from just 80 parts back in December 2017 to over 300 parts in the present.

The use of 3-D printers is more focused on producing protectors and harnesses for the cars in their Heritage line-up. Rest assured that they will introduce more and more parts in the future by collaborating more with their suppliers from Nissan Motor, Nissan Motor Sports International, Autech Japan, and more. It’s a good day to be a Skyline owner (if you have the money to buy these ‘new and improved’ parts). Overnight parts from Japan, anyone?
