Maserati Grecale Malaysian launch

Naza Italia today unveiled the Maserati Grecale SUV in Kuala Lumpur where the model also made its first public appearance in the ASEAN region.

Here to take on models like the Porsche Macan and the BMW X4, the Maserati Grecale will sit below the Levante in Maserati's product portfolio.

There will be three variants available, which are the Grecale GT, Grecale Moderna, and the Grecale Trofeo which we are looking at here.

Both the Grecale GT and Grecale Moderna are powered by mild-hybrid powertrains, comprising a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and an e-booster.

While the GT version produces 300 hp, the Grecale Moderna makes 330 hp. Both models produce 450 Nm of torque.

The range-topping Grecale Trofeo however, gets a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 530 hp and 620 Nm of torque. In terms of performance, the GT and Moderna variants sprint from 0 to 100 in 5.6- and 5.3 seconds respectively, while the Trofeo does it in 3.8 seconds.

All three variants get an eight-speed automatic transmission, but with varying gear ratios. Also standard across the range is the 4WD system.

While the Grecale GT comes with an open mechanical rear differential, the Moderna gets a limited slip self-locking mechanical rear differential. The Trofeo on the other hand gets a limited slip self-locking electronic rear differential.

Maserati's Vehicle Dynamic Control Module (VDCM) system also comes as standard, offering four driving modes - Comfort, GT, Sport, Corsa (Trofeo only) and Off-Road.

The Grecale uses Alfa Romeo's 'Giorgio' platform, which makes us optimistic for ride and handling as the Alfa Stelvio is good at both. Especially handling.

Maserati Grecale side

That said, the Grecale will be built at the same factory as the Alfas too. But the wheelbase is longer in the Maserati – over 2.09 metres – so space will be increased, and of course there's more room under the floor for that massive battery in the Folgore.

The in-car experience is managed using the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) Multimedia system, which is complemented by the Sonus faber 3D sound system which includes up to 21 speakers.
