Mercedes-AMG C 63 S 6

40,000. That's how many units of the previous-generation (W204) C63 AMG Mercedes-Benz managed to sell worldwide - the most for any AMG model in Merc's line-up. The W204 was only sold in limited numbers here. But things might be slightly different with the newly-launched W205 model - enough to help Mercedes break the 40,000-unit record perhaps. Here's why...

Selling so many examples of the C63 S is something to be very proud of because it is no ordinary C-Class. Underneath the saloon's inconspicuous exterior lies a hulking 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 which fires 510hp and 700Nm of torque to the rear wheels. This massive output propels the 1.7-tonne Merc from 0-100kph in four seconds flat, with top speed limited to 250kph. An AMG driver's package which includes a special training session unlocks a 290kph vmax.

The Mercedes-AMG C63 S gets many high-tech bits that accompany the brutish power developed by its fire-breathing V8. An AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission with AMG Dynamic Select manages power delivery to the wheels while the AMG Ride Control sports suspension keeps the car level-headed under all conditions with its 3-stage damping adjustment. It also gets ventilated and perforated 360mm ceramic composite brakes for optimum stopping power.

Much of its W205 C-Class DNA is left untouched, which means that the C63 S is still a practical and luxurious product expected of the three-pointed star. But it does boast unique AMG styling bits, which stand out even more when the car is kitted with the Edition 1 package which includes body stripes, forged 19-inch matt black wheels and a performance steering wheel, among others.

Despite the Ringgit’s unconvincing value at time of launch, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia managed to price the high-performance C63 S at RM698,888, considerably cheaper than its closest rival, the BMW M3 (RM730,800). The Edition 1 kit bumps the price up to RM723,888, which is still not bad for a car that will undoubtedly go down as a collector’s Merc a couple of decades down the road.
