The Genesis G80 Sport is the sporty version of an unsporty car

By topgear, 06 July 2021

If you’ve read our review of the new Genesis G80, you’ll know Hyundai’s answer to the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6 isn’t even slightly sporty.

That shouldn’t bother you, but if it does, then please be upstanding for the new Genesis G80 Sport – a lightly sportified take on what is a hugely refined, comfortable saloon.

No word yet on whether it’ll be sold in the UK, but given Brits’ fondness for AMG Line Mercs, S Line Audis and M Sport BMWs, we’d be surprised if Genesis deprived us of the G80 Sport. Engines? No news on those yet, either.

Full specs will be revealed nearer the G80 Sport’s launch later this year. For now, though, it seems the key differences between the Sport and the standard car are cosmetic – there’s a new three-spoke steering wheel, plus new grilles, bumpers, trim and wheels.

But there is one big mechanical upgrade that could make a big difference to the way the G80 drives: it gets rear-wheel steering. If done well, that ought to make the G80 feel significantly keener and more agile. Presumably Genesis has messed around with the suspension and so-on too, but again, we won’t know what it’s done until later.
