Volvo to phase out non-electrified vehicles by 2019

Volvo has made another clear mission statement – every model that they launch from 2019 will feature an electric motor, placing its electrification agenda at the very core of its business. Naturally, this will also mean that the company will eventually cease to use the internal combustion engine as a sole source of power.

“This is about the customers,”said Hakan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of the company. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

By that, he means the spread of electrified cars, namely fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and mild hybrids.

Five fully electric cars will be launched between 2019 and 2021, three from Volvo and while two will be from Polestar (read here what Volvo plans for their high performance brand). Details of this plan will only be revealed later.

And these five models will be joined by a range of petrol and diesel plug-in hybrids as well as mild hybrids (48 volts).

“Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have a total of 1 million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.”
