Toyota 86 GR, coming later this year

1

While news of the GR series from Toyota is quite exciting, we all realise that its relevancy to the Malaysian market is still unknown. First of all, we don’t know when any of the products will reach Malaysia – or, indeed, whether it will be introduced here at all.

The other reason is that almost all of the initial products in the pipeline are not available here (you can find out what those cars/MPVs are, here). Except for the 86 sports coupe, which may have exited UMWT’s website, but can still be ordered… so we hear.

So what is this 86 GR that is due to be out by end of this year. We know that it will be introduced in Japan first, of course, and since it is the mid-tier GR series – as opposed to the limited production top-shelf GRMN – it will be mass produced, likewise the baseline GR Sport series.

It will still run a 2.0 naturally aspirated Boxer engine and although output is not revealed yet, safe to say that the 86 GR will play along with the same 200ps and 205Nm. Only the GRMN series get engine tuning, remember.

The 86 GR will come with full aero kit at the front, side and rear; torsen LSD, Recaro seats, and forged aluminium wheels by Rays. The shock absorbers are from Sachs while the brake system utilises 6 pot at the front and 4 pot calipers at the back. Interestingly, TMC says that the 86 GR will only have a single tailpipe as opposed to the two seen on the standard car.

Plenty of GR emblems too, including on the start-stop engine button, the small diameter steering wheel, and the white-background tachometer.
