Tesla has confirmed a new battery pack for the Model S and Model X. A new battery isn’t anything to get excited about, you might think, but this particular battery means the Model S can now sprint from 0-100kph in 2.5s.

Please give a warm welcome to the new Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode. As the name suggests, it now sports a new 100kWh battery pack. And as the name also suggests, it has a bonkers sprint time allied to a claimed 315 miles of range (507km). If you have one, though, don’t expect the other, etc.

As mentioned, this 100kWh battery pack is also available on the larger Model X - you know, the one with the gullwing doors. When so applied, said X will sprint from 0-100kph in 2.9s and run a claimed 465km miles on a single charge.

Prices for the P100D have yet to be announced, but for reference, a Ludicrous-equipped P90D costs £106k. If you’ve just ordered a P90D with the Ludicrous mode, fear not: for an extra $10,000 (£7.5k), you can upgrade your order and go for the range-topper. Already own and drive a P90D but want the fastest toy in the box? It’ll cost you an additional $20k (£15k), because the 90kWh battery pack will need to be recycled.

“While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle,” Tesla explains, “we want to emphasise that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development. Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development.”

A saloon car with a big battery, capable of accelerating from 0-100kph in 2.5s. Sheesh.
