Gorgeous, isn't it? No doubt you've figured it out, but this is the brand new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet, and its S63 AMG Cabriolet sibling.

It's the sixth S-Class model in the line-up – to complete the range – and is the first S-Class convertible to be offered in 44 years. So it's quite a big deal, then.

As such, it's big. It shares 60 per cent of its body with the S-Class Coupe, and measures in 5m long, 1.9m wide and 1.4m high. There's a new rear floor over the Coupe, too, made from aluminium. In fact, aluminium accounts for over half of the S-Class Cab's metal mix.

Which means it remains as heavy as the S-Class Coupe and as stiff, though of course, this one comes with a three-layer soft top as standard with an 'acoustically optimised' roof lining, said to lower noise levels.

It can be opened and closed in around 20 seconds at speeds of up to 37mph, and features a very spangly climate control system that automatically adjusts to whatever state the roof's in. So no need to keep fiddling.

At launch, you'll be able to purchase an S500 Cabriolet (that's the silver car, above), which features a 4.7-litre V8 producing 449bhp and 516lb ft of torque from just 1,800rpm. Yep, steady, unruffled power is the key here.

If unhinged, very ruffled power is more your thing, there's also the S63 AMG Cabriolet (the white car in the pics), which comes with 577bhp, 664lb ft of torque and a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds. That car gets a rear-biased four-wheel-drive system as standard in Europe, though we'll get it as a rear-driver, a seven-speed gearbox and many driving modes.

Both S500 and S63 models come with air suspension as standard, the S63 getting specific kinematics, naturally, along with lighter, fade-resistant brakes, light-alloy wheels, some aero additions and a sportier interior.

Still, the 'standard' S-Class Cab's a fine thing itself. Roof up, it looks great, but roof down? Wow. The now familiar Merc star up front on the radiator grille flows into a long, sleek silhouette. Inside, it's as per the S-Class Coupe – that is to say, lovely – with lots of leather, wind protection, the option of Airscarf neck-heating, heated armrests and a litany of digial assistance to make driving as stress-free as possible.

Both S500 and S63 Cabriolet models will be launched at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, with prices announced in due course. A classy addition to the Benz soft-top range?
