Given the number of times we mentioned it, Volvo’s second generation XC90 crossover really is a huge deal. Indeed, the financial injection by China’s Geely group couldn’t have brought off a better result to say the least.

Some have asked us what makes it so good. To remind ourselves as well, we took the liberty of revisiting the XC90 not too long ago. After helming it for a few days, we’re certain the answer is in the XC90’s bones, electrified heart, numerous intelligent safety features and high level of luxury.

Starting with the chassis, the second-generation XC90 ushered in the debut of Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (or SPA) design. Flexible and greatly improved on past designs, it’s also very refined, fitted as it is with an electronically controlled air suspension feature. That alone has resulted in the XC90’s sublime ride and handling qualities. While not as nimble as its S90 and V90 siblings, it’s supple and comfortable when not thrashed. As far as crossover SUVs of this size go, the XC90’s road manners and capabilities aren’t bad at all.

If anything, the chassis dynamics matches the XC90’s heart rather well. The T8 variant featured here harnesses Volvo’s new plugin electric/petrol unit, meaning a 2.0-litre twin-charged (turbo and supercharged) four-cylinder petrol mill and an electric motor and lithium ion battery pack pairing.

Yes, it’s the very same package that powers all of Volvo’s new generation T8 PHEV offerings, but the XC90 was where this format first debuted, with 407bhp and 640Nm combined. What makes it so stellar is the way it manages both petrol and electric power seamlessly to offer a claimed consumption figure of 2.1 litres/100km.

Simply put, the new chassis and powertrain ensure this XC90 is equal to many of its rivals, something its predecessor wasn’t. What’s more, myriad intelligent safety features further solidify its position in the segment – not only do they make it seem that this crossover could almost drive itself, they perhaps make it the safest of its kind that money can buy.

That money also offers luxury that’s seen and felt, especially in Inscription Plus trimline. Even from its pictures on display here, it’s easy to see how the fine leather, plush fabric, elegant wood and gleaming metal of the XC90’s cabin make it a fitting ride for even the most demanding of owners.

How much does this Swedish study in excellence cost? Fortunately for Malaysians, local assembly and government EEV incentives help price the XC90 T8 Inscription Plus at a rather modest RM390,501.56. Given how much more it would have cost as a fully imported (CBU) model, it can be considered a bargain – perhaps even a steal when one takes into account the luxury, intelligent safety features, and overall style and finish this Swede offers.

VERDICT: 8.5/10

A tad pricey, but still one of the finest PHEV crossovers that’s also smart and frugal.
