Volvo Car Malaysia charges ahead with their electrification and sustainability in 2023

Volvo Car Malaysia announced its latest step forward in their electrification ambitions to transform Malaysia into an electric vehicle hub with new exportations expected to Vietnam and the Philippines this year. The e-luxury company has already begun deliveries to neighbouring country Indonesia in 2022.

Volvo Car Malaysia began their electrification journey with the introduction of their first-ever electric vehicle in Malaysia – the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric in March 2022. The fully electric premium SUV received overwhelming response from customers, with orders of Model Year 2022 being closed after 400 orders within the first month of its launch. In December 2022, the company introduced their second locally-assembled electric vehicle – the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, marking the next chapter in their electrification journey. Volvo Car Malaysia is on the right track with aims for 75 per cent of its sales to come from their Recharge Pure Electric line-up by 2025 and to become a fully electric car company by 2030.

Part of the initiative to electrify Malaysia was the introduction of its ‘Online Sales’ platform – the company’s first ever initiative to sell cars directly to its customers in Malaysia with the goal of building direct consumer relationship. Interested buyers may find the step-by-step guide on Volvo Car Malaysia’s ‘Online Sales’ platform here.

Volvo Car Malaysia was the first luxury automotive car maker in Malaysia to offer a full range of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and is also the first car manufacturer in Malaysia with a local assembly plant that assembles fully electric vehicles. Volvo Car Malaysia closed 2022 with a record of 3,194 sales – a 43 per cent increase from previous year and achieving a seventh consecutive year of sales growth. The company is also looking to increase the number of electric vehicles sold as they move closer to their 2025 goal.

Charles Frump, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, said: "Volvo Car Malaysia’s ambition towards an all-electric Malaysia is steadily becoming a reality. Our assembly plant here in Malaysia plays an important role in our electrification ambition as we bring our electric vehicles to two more ASEAN countries – Vietnam and the Philippines. The exportation of our locally assembled electric vehicles is one of our many steps to propel Malaysia becoming a hub for electric vehicles in the ASEAN region.”

With the capabilities of assembling electric vehicles locally, Volvo Car Malaysia’s local assembly plant provides an excellent opportunity to assert Volvo Car Malaysia’s position as a leading premium electric car maker and drive Malaysians further towards an all-electric future.
