UMW Toyota sold over 17,000 cars in Q1 2021
UMW Toyota Motor continues its strong position as they enter the second quarter of 2021 where over 17,000 units of Toyota and Lexus models were successfully sold in the first three months of this year. Their recently launched 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross will most likely boost their sales figure further thanks to its strong demand here in Malaysia.
Their best-selling models are the Toyota Vios and Toyota Hilux which continues to be the market leader in the country, with around 56% of market share within the first quarter of 2021. As for the Yaris, the hatchback continues to be the leader in its segment with an estimated market share of 73% during the same period.
The Vios and Vios GRS continues its upward trend in sales, but the most surprising aspect was how well the very impressive GR Yaris is doing after its official debut. Almost all of the allocated units were booked within a month of its debut here in Malaysia, which goes to show how strong the GR nameplate is here in the country (which also includes the GR Supra and Vios GR-Sport).
According to Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, "Malaysia, has seen strong Toyota sales this year due to improving conditions of the pandemic. With our wider line-up of models and exciting offerings, we are confident that our sales volume will grow steadily this year and certainly exceed the volume recorded in 2020. As always, we thank our loyal customers and also welcome those who are owning a Toyota for the first time."
"During the first quarter of 2020, the market was already declining due to the pandemic. This year, it’s a different story; with the situation easing as well as the support by the government through the PENJANA program that exempts sales tax partially or fully until June 30 this year, new vehicle sales have been consistently high. In fact, for Toyota, our momentum started in December when we launched the Toyota GR Yaris and Vios GR-Sport which excited the market and set a positive note to enter 2021,” added Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.
