This is the smaller SUV version of the new Hummer EV

“Designing the Pickup and SUV simultaneously helped us give each their own unique features to maximise utility,” says Phil Zak, executive director of design for the all-new Hummer EV. 

“The SUV’s tight proportions create a distinct profile and spacious cargo area, while maintaining a roomy and architecturally inspired cabin.”

Are they tight proportions, Phil? Really? Yes, the newly unveiled SUV you see above has a wheelbase that’s almost 23cm shorter than the pickup’s, but it’s still 5m long and almost 2.4m wide. We’d suggest that’s actually rather ginormous.

Still a brilliantly designed thing though, isn’t it? The SUV is perhaps even better looking than the truck thanks to that angular rear canopy and the full-size spare on the back. The standard Infinity Roof remains too with its clever removable panels – made possible by the under-floor battery pack being turned into a structural element on GMC’s Ultium Platform.

Bad news for all you 1,000bhp fans though; the SUV’s most potent powertrain will still deploy three e-motors, but unlike the Pickup they will only produce 830bhp and 15,600 Nm of torque for a 0-97kph time of around 3.5 seconds. Should still be plenty, mind. Down the line there’ll also be two-motor versions with roughly 625bhp.

All Hummer EVs will get four-wheel steer as standard with a trick crab walk diagonal-drive function, as well as adaptive air suspension, 22-inch wheels and 35-inch Goodyear all-terrain tyres. The SUV gets better departure and breakover angles thanks to its shorter wheelbase, and the optional Extreme Off-Road Package adds smaller wheels with chunkier tyres, underbody armour and a whole heap of cameras that provide different views of your immediate surroundings. The headline off-roading stats are 33cm of suspension travel, a max ground clearance of 40cm and a wading depth of just over 80cm.

First Edition models with that three-motor powertrain will manage over 483 kilometres on a single charge and will get 300kW fast charging capabilities. They’ll also have the ability to remotely charge other EVs with a 6kW onboard generator. 

Inside there’s a huge amount of space for five, as well as a 13.4-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch driver display. GM reckons there’ll be nearly 200 accessories available for the SUV and Pickup too.
