Here’s a little car with a big name: it is the BMW M Performance Parts Concept, revealed today ahead of a run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
It is, in short, a BMW M2 with a raft of performance addenda from BMW’s motorsport catalogue, with the aim of offering a lighter, punchier and more aero focused version of the company’s punchy little sports coupe.
Thus, BMW has managed to carve out a whopping 60kgs from the M2’s weight, deploying carbon wherever possible. There’s a carbon bonnet, carbon side panels, carbon fibre front winglets and side sill winglets, and a carbon fibre roof finished in – wait for it – a clear carbon finish. Say carbon too many times and it soon sounds strange.

We’re told this car is “based on the BMW M2”, itself recently replaced by the M2 Competition, so bank on the 3.0-litre twin-turbo sixer’s 404bhp and 550Nm of torque.
However, it does get very fancy suspension: M Performance coilovers that can be lowered by 20mm, and offer 12 compression stages and 16 rebound stages. Any more and you’d just get confused. And yes, the springs do come in black.
Elsewhere, there are ‘frozen gold’ 19in M Performance forged alloys – 6kg lighter than standard M2 wheels – a carbon fibre rear diffuser, tailgate, and even carbon fibre inside the cabin. The seats – CF – are 9kg lighter than regular M2 seats, and there are two special seats in the back too. Plus, a lighter battery that saves 14kg.
“BMW M GmbH was closely involved in creating this more emphatic design,” we’re told, “contributing its racing expertise to the development of all M Performance Parts.”
So this little car with the big name is basically a rolling BMW performance parts catalogue. Like it?
