This is the 2021 Toyota Fortuner – order books open, from RM172k

UMW Toyota Motor kicked off the new year by opening the order books for the facelifted Toyota Fortuner. The 2021 model is offered in two variants, namely the returning 2.7 SRZ spec and an all-new 2.8 VRZ range-topper. The latter, running the same 204PS/500Nm turbocharged and intercooled 1GD-FTV engine as the Hilux Rogue, replaces the outgoing 2.4-litre option.

On the surface, Toyota has really gone to town with the Fortuner's new look as the quad-LED headlights, meshed front grille, bumpers, 18-inch alloys and two-tone bodywork are all entirely new. Things are similarly fresh inside with a new seat design, updated instrument panel and ambient lighting really sprucing up the seven-seat cabin of an SUV that sits on the same ladder frame platform that underpins the Hilux. That said, some of these standout changes are reserved to the 2.8 VRZ model pictured, with the 2.7 SRZ packing a supposedly different set of cosmetics altogether.

Also reserved for the 2021 Toyota Fortuner 2.8 VRZ is the full Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) package, which includes features like pre-collision system, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control and yaw assist function.

In terms of powertrains, both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and part-time four wheel drive system with an automatic limited slip differential (LSD). Naturally, those who opt for the 2.7 SRZ will have to make do with a smaller output, specifically 166PS and 245Nm – less than half the 2.8 VRZ's maximum torque.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for. And the 2.8 VRZ's gains in styling, tech and performance will set you back a cool RM203,183, nearly RM31k dearer than the Fortuner 2.7 SRZ which costs RM172,244 on-the-road without insurance. Both models are backed by a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty for added peace of mind.
