Meet the NIO ET Preview. It’s an electric saloon car made be the same company that set a lap record at the Nürburgring with its EP9, and, um, that’s all we really know about it.

The ET landed at this week’s Shanghai motor show, looking a wee bit more traditional than all the plug-in SUVs and crossovers scattered around the rest of the show. Two of which were NIO’s.

“The ET Preview represents NIO’s exploration of an all new car body,” the company says, “whose sleek new contours combine elegant proportions with power and beauty through a minimalistic design.”

Its simple, clean lines mark it out as a Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 rival even before you learn it’s electrically powered. Quite how much power that’ll involve is a mystery for now, but something resembling the stats of NIO’s ES6 SUV – 544bhp, 0-100kph in 4.7secs, a circa-300-mile range (483km)) – would certainly make it class competitive.

What do you reckon? Could the ET’s rakish, fastback looks could tempt you from a Tesla or Polestar?
