Do not adjust your sets. This is your first ever glimpse of something very exciting going on in Hethel. It’s your first ever glimpse of Lotus’s all-electric hypercar. Behold, the Type 130.

We’ll see the full thing later this year at a special event in London, though Lotus is being cagey about any more details beyond what you see here, and the fact that – according to new company boss Phil Popham – it’ll be “sensational” to drive.

“It is a statement of intent,” Popham told TopGear.com. “It will showcase the expertise that we’ve got – we’re a pioneering, entrepreneurial brand. And when you see the car, it will make a statement about design direction.

“It won’t just be a car that’s stand-out and unique. It’ll be a Lotus, with Lotus DNA, and elements of that will appear on future cars,” he added.

So whatever form this elusive green whisp takes will filter down into the more affordable stuff; a halo for the New Lotus. He wouldn’t be drawn on performance or power at this stage, only noting that the Type 130 will cost “into seven figures” and predictably be a very low-volume hypercar. But he did assure us the Type 130 “is built for the driving experience”.

“We’d like to think that people can really experience something quite special from a driving dynamics point of view,” he said, claiming this car will be the most “dynamically accomplished” Lotus has ever made.
