This 380bhp Golf GTI is madness

In case you missed the news, Mountune tunes Volkswagens now too. So only a few days after it revealed its 325bhp Focus ST, it’s showing off a Mk7.5 Golf GTI with a faintly terrifying 380bhp.

While the M330 Focus kit we wrote about last week is just a few lines of code and a new air filter, the GTI Stage 2 package is a bit more… involved. While Mountune will still quite happily send you the bits to fit yourself, we wouldn’t recommend it, given the £2,099 (RM11k approx.) kit includes a whole new turbocharger.

The IS38 turbo from the Golf R, to be precise, which together with an ECU tweak (or six) increases power from 242bhp to 380bhp, and torque from 370Nm to 510Nm. It’s available to owners of manual or DSG GTIs – the former get the option of an uprated clutch, while the latter get a software upgrade.

Thing is, however much power you manage to extract from the Golf’s 2.0-litre petrol engine, remember this is still a front-wheel drive car. With the Stage 2 kit it manages 0-100kph in 5.2 seconds, which is…slower than a stock Golf R. Probably a whole lot more exciting though.
