The Volvo XC90 PHEV just got better

Fresh off from launching its latest S60 saloon recently, Volvo Car Malaysia keeps its momentum going by officially announcing the refreshed XC90 model this week.

The range features a T5 Momentum base offering, followed by the electrified T8 Inscription and T8 Inscription Plus flagship duo. As for prices, the base T5 variant commands RM373,888 while the electrified range-toppers retail from RM399,888 (Inscription) and RM409,888 (Inscription Plus).

So, what's new? In the case of the T8 flagships (Inscription Plus pictured), plenty. Eagle-eyed readers would've already spotted the exterior's mild nip-tuck. Everything else remains largely the same with a few minor tweaks and enhancements.

Highlights include a new grille design, restyled front and rear bumpers - the latter now with tailpipes integrated, longer and wider tailgate garnish, not forgetting a brand new 20-inch alloy wheels design too.

On board, the XC90's signature Orrefors crystal shifter knob has been restyled altogether. The result is a new shifter that's both slightly larger and fancier than before.

As before too, the XC90 is available in four-, five- and seven-seat layouts, but theres now a new and much posh-er six-seat layout option available as well.

Mechanically, the T5 retains the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged 4cyl petrol setup, offering 254bhp and 350Nm.

The electrified T8, on the other hand, also retains its super- and turbocharged 2.0-litre 4cyl mill working in conjunction with an e-motor, but the latter is now paired with a beefed up 11.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The improved electric propulsion sees a 15 per cent bump in pure-electric driving range, raising it up to 50km in fact. On top of that comes a new brake-by-wire battery charging system too.

Besides this, Volvo also noted the enhanced advanced driver assist systems present in the electrified T8 duo. Key amongst which is the addition of 'Steer Assist' for the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and City Safety autonomous city braking suite; a new Road Sign Information system; as well as Auto Brake fro the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) system.

In terms of kit, a cooled glove box now comes standard across the range, with the T5 Momentum now primed with four- zone climate control too. Opt for the T8 and things like Park Assist Pilot, 360-degree parking camera and "high-level"  cabin illumination package are added into the mix.
