The Volkswagen Up GTI is now BACK (and more expensive)

By topgear, 10 January 2020

The new Volkswagen Up GTI (or up! as VW insists on badging it) will now cost you just under £16k (approx. RM85,386)! That’s roughly a two-grand price hike since we last saw it, but VW is trumpeting the return of its baby hot hatch (which briefly went off sale towards the end of last year) with many exclamation marks, so everything’s all fine!

We’re told the new Up GTI – and indeed all variations of the new Up – are the first VWs to wear the company’s new logo, so that’s new! Not much else is new – barring that new price! So you’re looking at a 113bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine up front and a six-speed box for a 0-100kph time of 8.8 seconds!

There are the same 17in wheels, lots of GTI badges and the checked cloth interior, as well as ambient lighting! And if your ingress and egress needs aren’t catered for by the three-door Up GTI, you can spend even more than the £15,895 (approx. RM84,826) asking price of that car and opt for the five-door version, which costs £16,295 (approx. RM86,960)! See? Exclamation marks make everything really fun and entirely palatable!

It’s a good ‘un, the Up GTI, because in 2017 we gave it our Top Gear Pocket Rocket of the Year award! Can we stop smiling now please, our cheeks are beginning to hurt?! Please?!
