The brand-new mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is busy splitting opinion throughout the Interweb. Some love its angular looks and naturally-aspirated V8 powertrain, others think it looks generic and are lamenting the engine’s relocation.

One thing that should unite the warring factions though is the price. That’s because Mark Reuss, president of GM, has confirmed that the base-spec Corvette will cost less than $60,000 in the US (RM246,600).

“I know many of you will be wondering where the new Corvette will be priced. We’re not ready to announce all of the pricing details, but what I can share with you is this,” said Reuss at the car’s reveal.

“When the 2020 Corvette Stingray goes on sale in the US, it will start at less than $60,000.

“This is what Chevrolet and the Corvette is all about. This is what our engineers and our teams strive for. Where else can you get a supercar that does 0-97kph in less than three seconds for this kind of money? Unbelievable.”

Like it or not, we can all agree that’s pretty darn impressive for a 495bhp, 637Nm supercar.

Of course, for those of us in the UK there will be a premium to pay, but anything around the £70,000 mark would still represent good value – and hey, we’re just thankful we’ll get the Stingray in the first place.

Also, just for comparison purposes, the 992 Porsche 911 Carrera S – with its 444bhp 3.0-litre turbo flat-six – starts at a whopping £93,110. The Porsche is a wonderful car, the benchmark in fact, but that’s quite a difference.
