The Hyundai Ioniq Scooter Concept may just happen

Looks like here’s another great concept that may just see the light of day – the Hyundai Ioniq scooter. First, let’s have a quick reminder of what it is: the Ioniq Scooter was first unveiled to the world at the 2017 CES at Las Vegas, USA, described as an electric-powered vehicle stored in the front door of the Ioniq (electric variant) specifically to provide users the final-mile mobility solution.

If what local news organisation The Korea Herald reported is true, then the automotive giant is indeed planning to manufacturer it and currently looking for a local partner to get the project going. Citing an industry source, the report says that Hyundai Motor has transferred the design of the scooter to Hyundai Rotem, the conglomerate’s locomotive manufacturing unit which are currently looking for a partner to make the first batch of scooters.

Another report by CNET indicates that the company has filed a patent application in the US for a ‘folding mobility vehicle’ on July 5.

Hyundai never offered the range or speed of the Ioniq Scooter when it was first unveiled in 2017, although did mention that it is charged while stored conveniently inside the front door. The location makes it more accessible, too.

It can be unfolded and folded with just one hand, and equipped with front and rear lights. An occupant sensor detects when a rider is safely aboard before the riding mode is enabled. Acceleration is controlled by scrolling up the thumb switch while braking is done by pressing a pad over the scooter’s rear wheel, or scrolling down the thumb switch.
