The Hyundai Ioniq 5 now has more range and more power
It’s been around for little more than a year, but the head-turning Hyundai Ioniq 5 has just received its first raft of updates that include more range and more power.
Yep, the larger of the two battery options has seen capacity rise from 72.6 to 77.4kWh, which Hyundai reckons will boost range from 298 to 315 miles. Meanwhile AWD variants see power rise to 321bhp, which should result in the 0-62mph figure falling by a tenth to 5.1 seconds.
Hardly earth shattering progress, but progress nonetheless. And the extra range brings it into line with the Kia EV6, the Ioniq 5’s sister car. You can still opt for the smaller 58kWh model too, which returns the same 238 miles from a single charge as it did from launch.
What else? Ah, a battery heater and conditioning system is standard now, meaning the cells will be at their optimum temperature for charging when you’ve entered a charging point into the sat nav.
Oh, and Hyundai is making a big thing of the new digital mirror tech: depending on trim you can get a digital rearview mirror (there’s a camera embedded in the rear spoiler) for an ‘unobstructed’ view behind the car, and side cameras replace conventional wing mirrors on the range-topper.
Let’s quickly run through the trims: SE Connect is the entry-level version, priced from £39,400 (RM218k) and available with rear-wheel-drive only. Front and rear LEDs, 19in alloys, a 12.3in touchscreen, wireless phone charging and active cruise control are all standard, as are smart frequency dampers that - so claims the brand - improve handling and comfort.
Premium trim starts at £41,900 (RM232), with a part-leather, soft-touch interior, 64-colour ambient lighting, a sliding centre console and the new rearview mirror camera all included.
Ultimate trim welcomes 20in alloys, rear privacy glass, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a head-up display and a BOSE sound system. Namsan Edition is the new range-topper, which gets the fancy side mirrors, a panoramic glass roof, leather upholstery and ‘relaxation’ seats. They’ll need to be very comfy indeed to sit with the asking price: £52,900 (RM293k) for RWD, or £56,400 (RM313k) for AWD.
And the styling? That hasn’t changed. No need to mess with a masterpiece, eh?
