2022 Acura NSX Type S teased in the US, limited to 350 units

It has been over six years since Honda launched the second-generation NSX. Despite having extremely big shoes to fill, the hybrid supercar was packed with clever tech for its time. Three electric motors to give it all-wheel traction, a world's first nine-speed dual clutch transmission and a carbon fibre floor... It had everything you could ask for from a car some perceived as Honda's version of Nissan's everlasting GT-R. Only this Honda isn't going to be around for quite as long.

North America's Acura has confirmed that 2022 will be the NSX's final model year. And it is planning to celebrate it with a bang, one with Honda's iconic Type S emblem attached. Historically, Honda has used Type S branding in the Civic to represent increased performance while retaining the car's passenger powertrains; a step below a full-blown Type R so to speak. So expect the 3.5-litre V6 engine and the electric motors attached to stay right where they are, although a bump in output and straight-line figures is certainly a possibility.

Acura will only build 350 units of the NSX Type S in its Performance Manufacturing Centre in Ohio, with 300 destined to stay in the American market while the remaining 50 get shipped to the rest of the world. This marks the first time a Type S model is officially sold outside of Japan. And with only 350 units up for grabs, the Type S is rarer than the NSX-R, which had a 483-unit production run between 1992 and 1995.

Order books for the 2022 NSX Type S will open in the US on 12 August, during which we can expect more photos and information on the latest iteration of Honda's halo supercar. Excited yet?
