The 'Electrified G80' is the very first electric Genesis

By topgear, 21 April 2021

This is the Genesis Electrified G80, the first fully electric car to emerge from Genesis, and highly unlikely to ever see European and British shores. Shame, especially when it looks like this.

And it looks broadly the same as the combustion-engined G80 we first saw last year, though in this iteration the lower part of the front grille has been adapted. The charge-point sits in the upper right of the grille (invisible when shut), but other than that, regular G80. So good, then.

Only a handful of technical details have been released, including mention of a 0-100kph time of 4.9secs. Not neck-snappingly quick, but quick enough, certainly. It’s AWD as standard (and thus a dual motor setup), but is able to switch to RWD thanks to a disconnect system that disengages the front motor and driveshaft.

Range? Apparently 311 miles (500km) on the NEDC cycle, and a 350kW rapid charging system allows 10 per cent to 80 per cent recharge in 22 minutes. Genesis quotes 4.3km/kWh of efficiency when running on 19in wheels.

Genesis reckons this e-G80 provides a “smooth and stable driving experience” with “powerful” performance. There’s adaptive suspension with ‘road preview’ (that uses a front-facing camera), but also a noise-reduction system pinched from the big GV80 SUV.

US and Canadian markets will get more details in due course. “The Electrified G80 marks the beginning of our journey into the EV market, representing Genesis in the era of electrification,” explains global brand boss Jay Chang.
