The 198PS Hyundai Kona 1.6 Turbo N Line is coming to Malaysia this month

If you like quick and quirky crossovers, you'll like this. Hyunda-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has confirmed that turbocharged variants of the Kona will be arriving in Malaysia later this month. This includes the Kona 1.6 Turbo N Line, which will become Hyundai's first N Line model to be officially sold in the country.

The incoming Kona 1.6 Turbo and 1.6 Turbo N Line will feature the Korean carmaker's 1.6-litre Smarstream T-GDi engine which packs 198PS and 265Nm of torque. This output goes to the front wheels via Hyundai's 'second-generation' seven-speed dual-clutch transmission; it's probably safe to expect smoother shifts and better efficiency than earlier iterations of this powertrain once offered here in the Hyundai Veloster Turbo.

Compared to the naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre models currently on sale in Malaysia, the turbocharged variants feature bigger brakes up front (17 inches vs 15), foglamps, a wireless charger, electrochromic rearview mirror, illuminated cupholders and a stop-start system. They're also better equipped on the safety front, with features such as lane following assist, smart cruise control with stop-and-go, cyclist collision assist and high beam assist all exclusive to the Kona Turbo and Kona Turbo N Line.

Naturally, the N Line will be the one to have, what with its aggressive styling, diamond-cut wheels and sportier interior which features leather-on-suede upholstery, must-have red stitchings, aluminium pedals and the mandatory N branding.

That said, it's worth noting that this isn't the full-fledged Kona N with the 276bhp engine shared with the i30N and recently-unveiled Elantra N. So, it's probably safe to expect a not-too-sizeable premium in pricing over the existing Kona line-up which retails from RM119,888 to RM136,888 - the pre-facelift Kona 1.6 Turbo was formerly sold here for RM143,888. Although prices for the new one remain a mystery, HSDM is already accepting bookings for the turbocharged Kona variants via its official online showroom.
