Speed limiters: are they a good idea?

The European Commission has provisionally approved plans to place speed limiters on all new cars sold from 2022 onwards, and we want to know your thoughts.

The intelligent speed assistance (ISA) system uses both GPS data and sign recognition technology to check speed limits, and then automatically keeps the car below the required limits. However, drivers are able to override this by pressing firmly on the accelerator.

The ISA system will become mandatory along with a raft of other safety features, including advanced emergency braking, lane-keep assistance and black box data recorders that will provide information in the event of an accident.

The Department for Transport has also confirmed that the UK will adopt the same measures whatever the outcome of Brexit.

The Commission has stated that it expects the safety systems to help save over 25,000 lives and avoid at least 140,000 serious injuries by 2038 – although the legislation will still need formal approval from the European Parliament and Council.
