So, Penang also wants its own 'international circuit'

It was only last April when we reported that Langkawi Island wants to build its own 'Nurburging' race track in 2023. Now, it seems that Penang wants in on the 'international circuit' action and they've actually allocated 2.8 hectares of land in Batu Kawan situated right next to the Penang State Stadium to do so. And they're planning to complete this project in the next three years.

The Star reported that this will be a privately funded project as part of Pakatan Harapan's manifesto to turn the allocated spot into the state's 'Sports City'. According to Penang's youth and sports committee chairman, Soon Lip Chee, "The state intends to build a conducive racing circuit to unearth new motorsports talents. It is among the projects listed in the state Pakatan Harapan manifesto during the 14th General Election and will serve as a component to turn the area into a ‘Sports City’. The state via Penang Stadium and Open Space Corporation called for proposals for the project last month."

"The racing circuit will be used for events and competitions at the national and international levels. This will stimulate the growth of Penang. This track will serve as a permanent space for people to race legally without endangering others on public roads. Races can be held for motorcycles and probably other motor vehicles as well, depending on the track design," added Soon.

While the proposal's deadline has been closed last Tuesday, Penang might be extending it for other companies to submit their proposals which must meet the criteria set by the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM). These include proper infrastructure, offices, areas for spectators like grandstands, plus many more. To put things into perspective, 2.8 hectares is roughly the size of four football fields.
