Seat will sell six electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2021

Seat has announced that it will sell six different plug-in hybrid or fully electric models before the beginning of 2021 – a hefty statement from a company without a single one on its books three months into 2019.

There are big plans afoot in Spain though. First up will be an all-electric version of the Mii, and then the introduction of the el-Born EV that was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Alongside these there’ll be plug-in hybrid versions of the next-generation Leon and Tarraco SUV, as well as similar (if slightly hotter) drivetrains for the Cupra Leon and upcoming Dementor – sorry, Formentor.

Seat has announced that 300 of its own engineers will develop a brand-new, smaller version of the Modular Electric Drive (MEB) platform that will be shared with the entire Volkswagen group.

The aim of this will be to produce a platform that can house entry-level electric vehicles costing less than €20,000. It’ll be plug-in power for the masses.

Company CEO Luca de Meo also confirmed that there will be a micromobility push from Seat. Whether that means the Minimó concept car or electric eXS kickscooter will see production we don’t know, but here’s hoping for some futuristic city solutions.

The whole plan comes after Seat celebrated its best ever financial results in 2018. With operating profit growing by over 93 per cent to stand at €223 million – there should be plenty of cash available for development.
