There’s a new electric luxury car brand, and its name is Automobili Pininfarina. The first project? A fully electric, Pininfarina-badged hypercar set to arrive in 2020.

Automobili Pininfarina was launched today by Mahindra & Mahindra and will use the company’s expertise in electric vehicles to build the upcoming speed machine. Mahindra of course, races in Formula E.

What do we know so far? That the fully electric hypercar will be able to go from 0-100kph in less than two seconds, from 0-300kph in less than 11secs, and flat out, we’re looking at the healthy end of 402kph. Possibly more.

And yet, despite this mega turn of speed – seriously, 0-100kph in less than two seconds, which is on par with Tesla’s upcoming new Roadster – Pininfarina reckons on a range of 499 kilometres.

It’ll also come with Level 3+ autonomy, too: not fully autonomous, and the driver will be needed for certain conditions, but a step up from simple lane-keep assist and radar cruise, for example.

The whole project will be limited to no more than 100 cars, and expect to pay just under €2million a pop.

Why a 2020 launch? Because in 2020, Pininfarina will celebrate its 90th anniversary; what better way than with a 402kph, fully electric present?

It’s a step on from Pininfarina’s earlier hydrogen-electric concept – the 2016 H2 Speed (pictured above). That car used a pair of fuel cells to power two electric motors.

“This project helps me and my family to realise my grandfather’s dream of seeing outstanding innovative cars solely branded Pininfarina on the roads,” explained Pininfarina chairman Paolo Pininfarina.

Mahindra Group boss Anand Mahindra added: “Italy’s renowned design expertise produces objects of true beauty and unique style. Drawing upon the pedigree and design vocabulary of the Pininfarina aesthetic heritage we will develop a rare collector’s item that only a handful of connoisseurs will ever own.”

Noting how EVs are the ‘future’, Mahindra said: “When power, beauty and high-end EV technology come together in one car, that will be the perfect luxury vehicle, that will give car lovers the freedom to roam without impacting the planet adversely.”

The whole project will be limited to no more than 100 cars, and expect to pay just under €2million a pop.

So, one of the world’s most storied car design studios – an astonishing back catalogue of stuff that includes the Nuova Alfa Spider, Ferrari P4/5, Sergio, F12, 458 and so on – will create a high performance, luxury electric hypercar using race technology.
