Perodua buyers won't have to wait till 15 June for lower prices

The automotive industry is abuzz with talk of cheaper cars ahead of the sales tax reduction announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin last week. Enforcement is scheduled to begin on 15 July 2020 but national carmaker Perodua isn't one to sit around and wait.

From today until 14 July 2020, Perodua will be offering rebates ranging from 3 to 6 percent, depending on model, to ensure that customers will still be able to enjoy savings without having to put off the purchase of their new car for another week.

With its models boasting over 90 percent local content, Perodua is expected to maximise the sales tax reduction of 100 percent on CKD cars once the exemptions take effect. Perodua boss Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad has iterated his support for the move, adding that personal mobility will be needed at times like this despite understandably cautious spending.

“This move to fully exempt CKD cars from sales tax is a confidence boost for the automotive industry – not just for car buyers but the entire ecosystem of manufacturers, suppliers and dealers. Along with low financing rates at this difficult time, we are cautiously optimistic that this will spur new car sales,”
