No, the SmartTag is no longer for sale. But if you’ll walk this way…

Based on Touch ‘n Go’s plan, toll payments on all highway will start to be collected using the RFID system beginning January 2019. It’s still not the perfect system we have been dreaming of (if nothing but based on our experience with it so far… but that story is for another time), especially when toll prices are still the same (hah!).

However, what happens to all SmartTag users and their devices? Good news for them because the Austrian technology provider of the system, Efkon Asia Sdn. Bhd. will still provide sales and service support. By October 2018, Efkon Asia will also have a nationwide sales and service network set up.

Additionally, while Touch ‘n Go have stopped selling the SmartTag device, the manufacturer have already made the Infra-Tag device design available under various brands. One is already on sale on Lazada, manufactured by Sigma Technology Sdn. Bhd. with the brand name MaxTag. And yes, Efkon Asia says that this is 100 per cent compatible with the current Malaysian toll system.

Efkon is also recognised by some automotive manufacturers which have chosen to use their devices and incorporated it into several new car models. The Tag is manufactured in Malaysia and exported to Indonesia and Vietnam.
