During the weekend, Japan’s famed Suzuka Circuit was in Sunway Pyramid, Subang, when 400 participants took part in the first ever Toyota Velocity eSports Championship. Dubbed as the biggest national eSport event aimed at finding the country’s fastest simulator driver, it was organised by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. and the first Malaysian car company to be associated with eSports.

After two days of racing and finding the fastest of the fast, ten participants emerged for the Sunday head-to-head final race. The Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept used for the race never looked better in the hands of these drivers, battling it out on the Suzuka Circuit. The virtual driving and gaming fans were certainly entertained, but the casual shoppers also seemed very intrigued.

At the end it was Muhammad Uzair who triumphed, beating the competition with a commanding race from the start. He started from pole, a position he earned just as strongly at the very last minute of qualifying. First runner-up was Mior Muhammad Hafiz while Aiman Haziq finished at third place. They each won RM20,000, RM10,000, and RM5,000 respectively. Not bad for a weekend of racing. The other seven finalists were also rewarded with RM2,000 for their achievement.

“We are delighted with the overwhelming response from the public towards the very first Toyota Velocity Championship. Esports is definitely a rapidly rising industry not just in Malaysia but also globally as it provides exciting experience for the younger generation. Toyota’s involvement and strong presence in such activities complements the dynamic and sporty side of the brand,” said Mr. Ravindran K., President of UMWT.

The final race followed an exciting exhibition race between celebrities from the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Racing Festival; Diana Danielle, Janna Nick, Shawn Lee and Syukri Yahaya Aiman Tino, Khai Bahar, Nabila Razali, Wany Hasrita, Akim Ahmad and Nabil Ahmad, who raced against UMW Toyota Motor’s racers. The celebrities, who also race in the Vios Challenge One-Make Race of the TGR Racing Festival, also interacted with their fans and the public during the event.

Fans will also be able to catch the celebrities in full action at the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Racing Festival at MAEPS Serdang, from 19 th to 21 st October 2018.
