The 1.3L engine that’s paired with the double-clutch gearbox comes with cylinder shutoff, and both petrol engine (variants) feature low friction cylinder walls and particulate filter as standard. The new diesel engine comes with a turbocharger with optimised response time and water intercooling. Fuel tank is 43 litres as standard, but with an optional 51-litre tank available.

The car will be built in Mexico for the time being, with another line of production in Rastatt, Germany, scheduled to go online beginning 2019. The public will get to see it first at the Paris Motor Show beginning next week; although the Chinese market A-Class L Saloon in which this saloon started from was displayed during Auto China back in April this year.

The longer rear-end gives it an aerodynamic advantage compared to the hatchback A-Class; and unsurprisingly, equal to that of the CLA. However, with a smaller frontal area than the CLA the A-Class Saloon comes with a lower aerodynamic drag. In fact, Mercedes says that the Saloon has the lowest aero drag of all production vehicles worldwide.

Inside, the dashboard cowl is no longer there and makes the Widescreen display completely free-standing and takes up almost half of the dashboard width. However, the widescreen display is optional. There are actually three cockpit versions available, the first comprising of two 7-inch displays, the second made up of one 7-inch and one 10.25 inch display. The one you want is the two 10.25 inch display, of course.

For the first time, the A-Class is able to drive semi-autonomously using features that include Active Distance Distronic which is part of the Driving Assistance Package. This provides route-based support to the driver in numerous situations, and to predictively and conveniently adjust the speed, such as when approaching bends, junctions or roundabouts. Also on board are Active Emergency Stop Assist and Active Lane Change Assist.
