Mercedes-Benz will no longer partake in Formula E after 2022

After yet another successful season in Formula E, Mercedes-Benz has announced that they will no longer take part in the FIA Formula E electric race series after 2022. They've recently concluded the 2021 season by winning the driver and team championship crowns thanks to their two drivers, Nyck de Vries (2021 Formula E world champion) and Stoffel Vandoorne (ninth).

Despite the announcement to pull out from the all-electric series, Mercedes-Benz will still focus on its goal of producing an entire line-up of EV vehicles by the year 2030. A total of £34 billion (around RM197 billion) has been invested to reach this goal, and their efforts in Formula E will be used to their full extent to ensure that 2030 turns to be a success for them.

Mercedes-Benz also stated that they'll concentrate more on Formula 1, a race series where they believe can provide the fastest development for future vehicle technologies. It's probably a good move considering that their upcoming AMG.EA vehicle electric platform is set for launch in 2025, which is not far from now.

According to Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, "At Mercedes-Benz, we have committed ourselves to fighting climate change at full force in this decade. This demands the accelerated transformation of our company, products and services towards an emission-free and software-driven future, and to achieve this, we must give full focus to our core activities."

"In motorsport, Formula E has been a good driver for proving our expertise and establishing our Mercedes-EQ brand, but in future we will keep pushing technological progress – especially on the electric drive side – focusing on Formula One. It is the arena where we constantly test our technology in the most intense competition the automotive world has to offer – and the three-pointed star hardly shines brighter anywhere else. F1 offers rich potential for technology transfer, as we can see in ongoing projects such as the Vision EQXX, and our team and the entire series will achieve net-zero status by the end of the decade," added Schäfer.
