McLaren 765LT zooms into Malaysia

By thoriq, 18 September 2020

With three new supercars making landfall locally today McLaren wasn't one brand to be left out after Porsche and Ferrari. The latest addition to zoom into the flagship McLaren Kuala Lumpur centre, Glenmarie earlier today is none other than the new and very hardcore 765LT limited-run special.

First up, the numbers: 765PS (755bhp), 800Nm and a claimed 1,229kg (dry) bulk sees this latest and extreme midship from Woking capable of 0-100kph in 2.8 secs, 0-200kph in 7.2 secs, as well as a claimed V-Max of 330kph.

Much of this was made possible thank to the ‘diet’ the 720S Base car underwent to become the 765LT. All the body panels are now carbon fibre – that’s 14kg saved; you get the seats from the Senna – 18kg right there; there’s new lightweight forged 10-spoke wheels fitted with sticky Pirelli Trofeo Rs as standard – total saving 22kg; and even titanium wheel nuts to shave off a few more grams.

The 765LT also borrows the Senna’s brake callipers as standard and, as an option, the Senna’s extremely special carbon-ceramic discs that take seven months to cure for ultimate fade-free performance. The result? Equally impressive stopping power: 200kph-0 in just 110m – which equates to probably enough force to tear your eyes out of their sockets...

Besides that, the rear windscreen and rear quarter windows are polycarbonate, and there’s even thinner glass for the windscreen and windows, no carpets, plus a new carbon fibre centre console without an arm rest. Yep, when it comes to weight savings, McLaren aren’t kidding.

Notable too is the 765LT’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which is now brimmed with McLaren’s first full titanium exhaust system. Lighter, noisier, and fitted with quad pipes a la Bugatti Chiron Sport, the pipes, like on the 600LT, are a defining design cue, signifying that this isn’t the regular 720S to avid supercar spotters.

Whilst here, it’s also worth noting that the powertrain borrows bits like the fuel pump, pistons and head gasket from the Senna too.

Suspension, on the other hand, is a refined version of the 720S base car’s linked-hydraulic Proactive Chassis Control II setup, now with 11 per cent stiffer spring rates front and rear, a 5mm lower ride height at the front and a 6mm wider front track. Final drive ratio is 15 per cent shorter than a 720S, the lowest of any McLaren, which should see extreme in-gear acceleration feel.

Lastly, we’ll talk about the styling and, we won’t argue that this is far from subtle - it’s functional more than anything. Altogether, there’s 25 per cent more downforce than the 720S. The huge carbon front splitter is all new, as are the GT2 RS-styled vents in the top of the front wheel arch that relieves pressure and reduce lift. Elsewhere, there are larger and more pronounced carbon side skirts, not forgetting an active wing that’s 20 per cent bigger than the 720S’s, and a substantially larger rear diffuser.

McLaren says the 765LT is still a road car at heart, but the pressure is definitely on given that this is the first ‘Longtail’ to directly succeed another LT model, the brilliant 675LT. Big boots to fill…

As for price, McLaren Kuala Lumpur indicates that each 765LT commands RM1,488,000 before taxes and options. Realistically, you’d probably need to double that figure to ensure your spot in the order books, and you’d best hurry too. As reported, just 765 units have been planned, and the order books are filling up faster than the 765LT accelerates.
