Pramac Ducati's Jorge Martin takes home his first MotoGP race in Austria

In the world of two-wheel motorsports, there's nothing sweeter than winning your very first MotoGP race. For Jorge Martin (Pramac Ducati), that moment arrived yesterday during the Styrian GP at the Red Bull Ring, Austria, and it's even sweeter considering that he's a rookie AND had to go through rehab for injuries sustained earlier this season.

The start of the race led to a first lap red flag after Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) collided with Dani Pedrosa's downed KTM bike which turned into a huge ball of fire in the middle of Turn 3. Savadori was handled by the medical team but both riders were able to walk away from the scary incident.

After the track was cleared, the race restarted with Jorge Martin battling with defending world champion, Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar). Mir's Suzuki GSX-RR came equipped with a new holeshot device, which proved to be quite the challenge for the leading Ducati man. Nevertheless, Martin was able to defend his position and ran the perfect race before crossing the chequered flag as the victor.

Joan Mir finished second while the 2021 MotoGP championship leader, Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) managed to salvage P3. Quartararo's closest rival, Johann Zarco (Pramac Ducati) was close on his heels in P4 but was overtaken by Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda) during the final lap. Binder, Nakagami, and Zarco finished the Styrian GP in fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.

The MotoGP boys and girls will remain in Austria for another race this weekend. A back-to-back race at the same track will almost certainly bring interesting results, and of course, more drama and action along the way. Stay tuned for more updates.
