Jean-Eric Vergne has won the 2018/19 Formula E world title
DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne has won the 2018/19 Formula E world championship after finishing seventh in the final race of the season, becoming the sport’s first ever two-time champion since its inception in 2014.
After the first of the weekend’s two races in New York, four drivers were still in with a chance of winning the driver’s title. However, after Sebastien Buemi missed out on the three points on offer for pole position, his slim chance had slipped away.
That left Vergne, who secured his first title last season, 22 points ahead of his closest rival Lucas di Grassi of Audi Sport ABT and 25 points ahead of Jaguar driver Mitch Evans – who realistically would have needed a miracle to clinch the title.
It all ended in disaster for the title challengers though, as di Grassi and Evans collided on the final lap of the race as they pushed for the extra points needed to overturn the defecit. Evans was handed a time penalty for causing the collision, but it had no real effect on the final standings as Vergne was already set to win the title.
Envision Virgin’s Robin Frijns took his second win of the season, meaning the 13 races produced an incredible nine different winners from eight different teams.
Despite Vergne’s teammate Andre Lotterer failing to finish the race, DS still managed to take the team title ahead of Audi Sport ABT.
So, with Porsche and Mercedes both joining the championship next season, will Vergne be able to complete his hat-trick, or are we set to see the big boys take over all-electric racing?
