Indonesia to sell only electric bikes by 2040, electric cars by 2050

One of the most populated countries in the world has made up its mind on where it will stand in terms of electric motorcycles and cars. Indonesia has set a target to sell only electric motorcycles by 2040 and electric cars by 2050. That's a lot closer than you think, folks.

According to a report posted by Reuters, Indonesia's Ministry for Energy & Mineral Resources will come up with a plan to fully utilise electric vehicles in the country, together with added incentives for its people. However, they have yet to set any policies to stop the use of internal combustion engines once these two timelines arrive.

This announcement follows the same road map as the country's plan to build a mega battery manufacturing plant in West Java. The Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) and an LG Group-led consortium will pump in close to RM5 billion to kickstart the whole operation situated about two hours from Jakarta.

The country will hopefully tackle two things when all of these come to play within the coming years - to become one of the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturer (thanks to its abundant supply of nickel laterite, the main material to produce lithium batteries), and reduce pollution (particularly air thanks to all the CO2 produced by the millions of vehicles travelling to congested cities like Jakarta). Good on ya'.
