Fully-imported Mazda CX-30 now open for booking in Malaysia

Mazda fans rejoice! Local distributor Bermaz Motors has opened the order books for the CX-30, a crossover that sits between the CX-3 and CX-5 which also underpins the MX-30 electric SUV that broke cover at the recent 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

We're still at odds with Mazda's peculiar way with numbers, but Malaysians who aren't very fond of the number four for superstitious reasons should find CX-30 a welcomed compromise between two of the brand's smaller SUVs.

Here, we're given two engines across three model variants starting with the familiar two-litre SkyActiv-G engine, which produces 163bhp and 213Nm. The range-topper is a SkyActiv-D model, but it's not the 2.2-litre mill we're acquainted with. Instead, the CX-30 gets a 1.8-litre version of the torque-rich diesel engine, good for 114bhp and 270Nm of twist.

Both engines are mated to the front wheels (there is no AWD at the moment) via a six-speed SkyActiv Drive transmission.

Wondering if you need more torque or more power? According to the CX-30's spec sheet, the petrol engines can go up to 196kph - 16kph more than the diesel - but we suspect the SkyActiv-D will be quicker off the line since maximum torque gushes in from just 1,600rpm (2,400rpm earlier than the SkyActiv-G's torque peak).

It's worth noting that the CX-30 is fully-imported (CBU) from Japan, so buyers can expect some nice goodies like a sunroof, automated tailgate, full-LED lighting, dual-zone climate control, reverse camera and the latest Mazda Connect infotainment first seen in the 2019 Mazda3 which is fully-compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Naturally, the availability of these features differ from spec-to-spec.

On the more technical front, all variants get Mazda's i-Stop engine idling system and G-Vectoring Control (GVC) Plus. Active safety features available on higher end models include Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM).

Prices for the new Mazda CX-30 start from RM143,119 for the 2.0G variant. The fully-kitted 2.0G High goes for RM164,119 while the 1.8D High tops the range at RM173,027. These prices are on-the-road sans insurance, and include a five-year warranty and free service package; not bad at all for a CBU given the high prices we got with the Mazda3.
