Fancy the Mini Convertible Sidewalk Edition?

By thoriq, 15 July 2020

Did you miss your chance to snap up one of the 20 Mini Convertibles launched about this time last year? Well, fret not then as BMW Group Malaysia have launched another 20 units, this time in a novel new ‘Sidewalk Edition’ trimline.

Besides the distinct and ‘youthful’ Deep Laguna metallic colour it’s exclusively dressed in, this open-top hot-hatch also features special ‘Sidewalk Edition’ badges inside and out, subtle blue highlights and ‘Petrol’ (read: yellow) contrast seams in the cabin, as well as two-tone 17-inch ‘Scissor Spoke’ alloy wheels.

Apart from these visual novelties, which also includes a graphics on the soft-top itself,  you’re not wrong into thinking that this so-called ‘special’ is no different from the regular Mini Convertible launched last year. Well, we say that firstly because you still get the same powertrain as before.

Up front sits a 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo petrol heart that sends 192bhp and 280Nm to the front wheels via a 7-speed DCT box. Nought to 100kph takes just 7.1 seconds whilst 230kph is the claimed V-Max figure. Drive it sanely and Mini says this drop-top will sip as low as 5.7 litres/100km too.

Should you be in the mood for some wind-in-hair magic, the soft-top mechanism takes just 18-seconds to either retract or extend whilst moving up to 30kph. Other on board niceties include a 12-speaker Harman Kardon hi-fi setup, Mini’s full swing of 4G-powered connectivity services, as well as a wireless charging pad amongst many.

As stated earlier, just 20 units of the Mini Convertible Sidewalk Edition are up for grabs, each commanding RM285,899.47 excluding insurance with the government's current SST waiver – it will cost RM295,888 from January 1, 2021 onwards with SST in effect.

Yep, slightly pricier than the regular convertible we saw las year too. We’ll leave it upon you lot to judge if the Sidewalk Edition’s unique aesthetics justify that premium or not…
