Mazda has reworked and facelifted the Mazda2 hatchback, and the order book is already open for the Japan market. Those who pre-orders one will find that the Demio name previously used in that market has been changed to, well, Mazda2. The car will be properly sold throughout Japan beginning September 12.

Design-wise, the front grille is much bolder with the chrome surround bordering the lower part of the front headlights. Of course, this is part of the new Mazda look and similar to other models which have been refreshed, such as the Mazda6.

Mazda being Mazda, a lot of emphasis is seemingly put into improving the driving experience. NVH have been improved to what the company quite interestingly describes as ‘higher-quality’ quietness. The suspension is new to give smooth vehicle movement and a more comfortable ride. GVC plus is also in the picture lending a more stable drive at high speeds.

Depending on variant, features include Lane-Keep Assist, Adaptive LED headlights with 20 individually controlled LED blocks, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) and Stop & Go that goes with the automatic gearbox.

There is a wide range of Mazda2, comprising of 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol and 1.8-litre Skyactiv-D (diesel) engines mated to either 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual gearbox, and both with i-Eloop brake regeneration system. Also, it is available with FWD or AWD.

The 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine is claimed to deliver an average fuel consumption as good as 19.8km/L or 5L/100km, while the Skyactiv-D engine goes as low as 25.2km/L which is equivalent to 4.0L/100km.

Prices start from 1,544,400 Yen (RM59,000) to 2,619,000 Yen (RM100,000), depending on powertrain and trim level.
