Darker film tint now allowed

Transport minister Anthony Loke has announced an amendment to the rule regarding window film tints, and it’s a good one. Currently, the rules state that the Visible Light Transmission level (VLT) for front windscreen and front windows are 70 per cent and 50 per cent respectively, while rear windows and windscreen are at 30 per cent.

The new amendment retains the VLT level for front windscreen and front windows, but allows for darker tint for rear windows and rear windscreen. In the words of the minister ‘we have no more limitations’. This is provided that the motor vehicle must be equipped with side mirrors (which is a rather odd thing to say because what car doesn’t come with it?)

However, this is limited to just privately owned vehicles as public transport and commercial vehicles will still need to comply to existing rules.

There is still provision for vehicle owners who want to have darker film tint for the front windscreen and front windows. All one needs to do is submit an application to the Road Transport Department, with the need justified on safety or health factors.

The application fee (on safety grounds) is RM50 and if approved, will require another payment of RM5,000 which will be valid for two years. Once that time has lapsed and the use of the dark tint is invalid, the person needs to re-submit another application together with the respective fees.

Those who apply for use of darker tint under health reasons must get a written confirmation from government medical specialist, in which all fees will be exempted.
