UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd recently confirmed that the highly-anticipated Toyota GR Supra manual variant will be making its Malaysian debut in 2023.

Speaking at the company's year-end gathering with the press recently, the company's president K.Ravindran broke the news saying that three new GR models, namely the GR Supra manual, the GR Corolla, as well as the all-new GR 86 are among the new models that the Malaysian market can expect in 2023.

In addition to the new GR models, the company also revealed that the 2023 Toyota Vios and the Toyota BZ4X are in line to make their Malaysian debut next year.

Coming back to the Supra manual, the car's 335bhp 3.0-litre engine will be paired to a six-speed manual transmission, similar to the one in the GR Yaris.

It’s no bodge job either, as Toyota’s engineers have gone to great lengths to tailor the manual box to the Supra’s straight six rather than simply slot in an existing transmission.

It is said that the clutch has been re-engineered with a larger diameter and stronger spring to cope with the 500Nm of torque, while the existing housing and driveshaft have been modified.

And thanks to the removal of various gubbins, a different audio system and new 19-inch alloys, you’re looking at a weight saving of almost 38.3kg against the automatic version. Not bad.

Even the interior has needed attention, with the centre console reconfigured to give enough clearance between the gear lever and the aircon controls.

Toyota says the transmission itself is of the ‘intelligent’ iMT variety, which “prioritises sporty performance” by optimising engine torque when the clutch is engaged and released during upshifts.

Other additions include a retuned suspension, a refettled Track mode “to allow for easy drifting”, and a temptingly named ‘Hairpin+’ function. Consider us intrigued.

You can still have the eight-speed auto if you prefer, in both standard and Pro guise as well as on the entry level 2.0-litre four-cylinder variant. Prices will be confirmed later this year, so stay tuned for more info when we get it.

That being said, everything you see here is based on the European-spec model which made its world debut in April 2022. The finalised specifications and other details like the pricing and whatnot is yet to be revealed by Toyota, so watch this space for more details on the Toyota GR Supra manual.
