BMW X2 launched in Malaysia

The splendid-looking SUV you see here is the latest model from BMW Malaysia – the X2. Let me stop myself right here to correct the term; BMW would like for the vehicle to be called a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), and as many of you already know, this is a new nameplate from the company which is described as promising unadulterated driving pleasure with the ideal balance between sporty driving dynamics and exceptional efficiency.

BMW Malaysia will provide a single variant of X2 sDrive20i M Sport. It packs a TwinPower 4-cylinder petrol engine that makes 192hp and 280Nm of torque. Top speed is 227kph with a 0-100kph time of 7.7 seconds. The SAC comes with a Getrag 7-speed double-clutch (farewell much-loved automatic).

Exterior
There’s something new about the grille – the shape is wider at the base compared to the top, meant to give the X2 a broader build. A sportier look also comes from the high-gloss grille bars to contrast the chrome surround.

The headlight shape is new too due to its narrower design on the inner side compared to the outer ones. Plenty of LEDs on this one too, including the headlights and even the foglights.

The BMW M Aerodynamics package comes with this Sports Activity Coupe with wheel arch trim and claddings on doors in body colour. Besides the BMW M rear spoiler, the BMW X2 is designed with the BMW M Sport Suspension, lowering it by -10mm to ensure a comfortable drive. Also from the M aerodynamics package is the M light alloy double-spoke wheels.

The rear boasts tailpipes with 90mm diameter and in high-gloss chrome. We particularly like the BMW emblem on the C-pillars, apparently a homage to BMW’s tradition of creating premium sports coupes. Perfect to underline the rear-wheel sDrive powertrain.

You may notice the lack of side (plastic?) cladding at the lower portion of the door as seen in international launch photos which comes with the M Sport X kit. But the local variant comes with the M Sport kit, and we are told looks better anyway. You be the judge.

Interior
Space-wise, it is exactly how it looks – an X1 but with lower roof. The rear door handles are ‘hidden’ in the C-pillar, as faux-coupes tend to do to enhance the visual effect.

The rear luggage compartment offers 470 litre of space that can balloon to 1,335 litre with the 40/20/40 seats folded. The rear emblem is also the lever to open the tailgate, although Comfort Access System is a far easier way to do it.

The X2 sDrive20i comes with a full colour head-up display, 8.8 inch touchscreen with navigation, Driver Assistance System with Park Assistant for effortless parallel parking manoeuvres. Of course, there’s also the BMW Connected system (Intelligent Emergency Call, Teleservices, Concierge Services, BMW Online and BMW Remote Services).

Price
The fully imported BMW X2 sDrive20i with M Sport kit is priced at RM320,000. This includes BMW Group Malaysia’s 5-year Unlimited Mileage warranty, Free Scheduled Service programme, and BMW Tyre Warranty programme.
