Say the word ‘bobsled’ too many times and it sounds ever more entertaining. So here we go: BMW is developing a two-man bobsled in collaboration with the German Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton Federation (BSD).

That’s the prototype, above, scheduled for first ice-track tests before the year is out. BMW is planning on transferring its considerable carmaking skills into bobsleds. They’re starting with something called an ‘innovation driver’, using BMW Motorsport’s measurement system to analyse performance, no less.

“Aerodynamics, chassis development and carbon fabrication are areas in which BMW is working at the highest level, and which are also extremely important for a racing sled,” according to BMW’s Thomas Hahn. That’s right, people, RACING SLED.

There’s little technical info on the BMW bobsled at this stage, other than it’ll likely be built from carbon fibre, and feature a livery in the traditional BSD colours of yellow and black. Also, Hahn notes how the team is “really looking forward to the exciting further development over the coming years”.

Does this mean a BMW M bobsled? A Competition Pack bobsled? A bobsled Gran Coupe? Perhaps even a long-wheelbase bobsled suitable for four people or more? Only time will tell. If they suddenly decide to do a mad 4.4-litre V8 prototype bobsled, we’ll let you know.

Also, bobsled.
