Bentley proves powerful sustainable fuel at Pikes Peak

By sep, 29 June 2021

The war/debate between electric and sustainable fuel has been going on for quite a while now, and Bentley has added another bullet for the sustainable fuel camp with its latest achievement during last weekend's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Its sustainable fuel-powered Bentley Continental GT3 Pikes Peak race machine finished second in the Time Attack 1 class and fourth overall, beating all of the other electric entries on the list. At the hands of Rhys Millen, former King of the Mountain, the climb was completed in 6:36.281 despite facing technical difficulties and harsh weather conditions.

Bentley's first-ever renewably-powered racecar produces around 750hp, which was more than enough to beat all the other 'sustainability-focused entrants', particularly the EVs. The Continental GT3 Pikes Peak was well on its way to crossing the line in first place, but a boost pressure problem put Millen just 6 seconds behind the race winner, Romain Dumas and his Porsche 911 GT2RS Clubsport.

According to Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Paul Williams, "We know we had the pace today both to win our class, and to break the Time Attack 1 record. The weather sadly wasn’t with us though, with the shortened course meaning our assault on the record was never a possibility. While that’s a bitter pill to swallow, I’m proud to have entered such a strong renewably-powered racecar – the fastest at the #event - and equally proud of the team that’s delivered this project. This is the first step on Bentley’s renewable fuel journey, and there will be many more opportunities to come. Perhaps we’ll even come back to Pikes Peak next year."
