AMG GT grows a pair (of doors), priced from RM1.1m to RM1.8m
Wealthy enthusiasts with families rejoice. Mercedes has finally launched a V8 AMG with four doors that isn’t an E-Class on steroids, and it’s called, rather creatively, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The Sepang International Circuit was the fitting host for its launch, which coincided with the debut of the refreshed Mercedes-AMG C63S duo.
The passenger-friendly variant of Affalterbach’s headlining GT Coupe is offered here in three engine variants, namely the AMG GT43, GT53 and GT63 S, all of which pack nine gears and 4Matic+ (Mercedes lingo for AWD).
Power delivery in the 43 and 53 is managed by a 9G-Tronic transmission, with the beefier AMG Speedshift MCT 9G gearbox reserved for the GT63 S.
The range topper is also the only GT 4-Door packing a four-litre bi-turbo V8, good for 639bhp and 900Nm of twist. In a car with 395 litres of boot space and enough seats for five at that.
The result is a cruise ship, no, missile, that will do 0-100kph in 3.2 seconds, all the way to a supercar-hunting vmax of 315kph. Its sticker price of RM1,798,888 is breaching into supercar territory as well.
The marginally more affordable GT43 (RM1,098,888) and GT53 (RM1,298,888) pack powertrains that mirror those of the CLS450 and CLS53. This means both are powered by a three-litre straight six with a 48V mild hybrid system which delivers 367bhp/500Nm in the GT43 and 435bhp/520Nm in the GT53, 16kW electric boost aside.
With things like 21-inch forged alloys, AMG Aerodynamics package, AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre package and AMG Exterior Night package part of its standard arsenal, the GT63 S remains the four-door AMG to have. It also has a ‘Race drive program’ with something called Drift Mode. And 900Nm.
